Being Passionate about your Work

Passion will move men beyond themselves, beyond their shortcomings, beyond their failures”. – Joseph Campbell

Have you ever found yourself wrapped up in one position, starring at wall, roof, screen? Have you become so bored with work that you’ve started watching out of the window counting how many people are passing by?  Have you ever started thinking about work as simply…work? Everyone needs a little inspiration from time to time. Whether it’s to reframe your workplace goals, or to give serious thought as to why you’re working a specific job in the first place.

As a child there is one dream you had, what was it? Rewind your memory, and find out what was it? Is it the same one dream you holding or did you change course? Fast forward to the present, are you where you dreamt you would be?

Now, suppose you receive a cheque for one million dollars today and you were told you that you could pursue any career path or start any business you wanted to, with no expectation that you would ever pay me back whether or not the business makes a profit. What career you would pursue or what business would you want to begin.  Think about it, would you be in the same career or business you are in today?

I rewind into my childhood some years back as I won one award in a painting competition and when asked what I wanted to be I said a teacher! Even though life was preparing me for the journey I was not ready for the assignment during my years in high school. Fast forward to present, as I prepare my sessions for my audience I feel excited and happy that life would such a dream to me.

It is important to figure out what is the passion inside of us that will drive us to become the very best we can be. What is the passion that makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning ready to take on the world? What is the passion that will help you keep going when everything around you is falling apart? What is the passion that will make you want to give 150 percent of yourself, rather than putting in the minimum requirement to pick up a paycheck?  What is that passion for you? Once you identify your passion you can really begin to figure out what roads lie ahead that will allow you to pursue it.

Warren Buffett, observed the importance of finding what brings meaning to your life and making it your focus each day. Steve Jobs of Apple Inc. said that people should do what they love doing, sharing that it was his passion for his work and a belief that “people with passion can change the world for the better” that drove him.  Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook mentioned that people should find that thing they are most passionate about and pursue it.

When you are passionate about something you have more energy, you work much harder, you get more creative, you search more diligently for solutions when difficult problems arise, and you inspire others who work alongside us. Each of these elements helps to increase you chances of success. We are the happiest when we are pursuing our passions in life, and that is the very best kind of success. My question to you is, “are you passionate about what you are doing today?”

Remember the words of Joseph Campbell, American Mythologist, Writer, and Lecturer that, “If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. Wherever you are—if you are following your bliss, you are enjoying that refreshment, that life within you, all the time.”
